Email & Spam Filters

Skip | 26 December, 2004 13:11

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!  We took the day off from our blog and really enjoyed the day with our families, both Dave and myself.

We're both very blessed to have wonderful and loving families.  They are the backbone of our very existance, as few people could put up with the online hacks, marketer's and programmers that we are!  To both our families:  thanks for putting up with us!

Today's message is about the nasty and still growing nature of SPAM email and email filters as used by Internet Service Providers and web hosts.

If you use email, you get spam.  Plain and simple.

But if you host your own website, whether it be for selling products, services, a blog or just a family based website, you certainly have to contend with SPAM.

There are a lot of client side spam filters out there.  I happen to use Outlook 2000 for my email client and earlier this year found the great tool called Spam Bayes.

Spam Bayes is a plug in that learns as it is used.  So the more email you get, the better and faster it learns what is spam and what is legitimate email.  Spam Bayes provides two buttons and two folders.  The buttons let you mark what is and is not spam.  The folders are spam and probable spam.  It's a great tool for knocking out those spam messages if they get thru out web hosting provider.

On the server side, our web hosting provider, BAPort, utilizes a fantastic email filtering system that allows you to specify all types of criteria for knocking out spam before it even gets to your inbox.  In addition, it gives you a catch-all main account and unlimited email forwarders.  But the spam filters are very slick.

They allow you to select any words you like, plug them in, and have the server decide what should happen to email that contains any of those words, email addresses or even website URL's.

As an active publisher of advice, education and news related to building your own website, we have chosen to add the blog you are now reading as a main communication tool.  This blog will eventually supplant and replace our email marketing system.

Why?

Because so many people are using spam filters, be they server side or client side, that our emails are simply not getting thru.  Mind you, we're not using naughty words and we don't spam.  However handy and helpful spam filters are, they also can filter out wanted email.

So as the world gets used to knocking out spam, people will also have to get used to finding new ways to ensure they get the info they want and need.  The wave of the future is blogs and RSS.
