Santy Visit Crushes Servers

Skip | 29 December, 2004 10:12

It was only a matter of time.

Virus writers have finally started targeting web servers and their hosted software to spread their ill will.

This article talks about the Santy virus which initially was aimed at sites that used phpBB, the very popular chat board system used by millions of websites.  They used Google to locate and spread the virus.

But the initial worm gave way to creative dickheads who decided they would morph it into PHP and Perl versions, which work outside of phpBB, depending on your script system.

So there are two things you should be aware of:

1.  If you run phpBB on your website, you should make sure the version you run is the most recent version.  Check http://phpbb.org
2.  Keep an eye on your website / web server.  There are many free services that will ping your website at regular intervals and email you if your site is down.

Lastly, if you are using PHP on your site, even if you are NOT using phpBB, you should be careful with your coding that you take good care of the security issues of your scripts.
