Search Engine Suicide Watch

It's that time of the year.
It's what I call the "search engine suicide watch".
Usually, twice a year, Google does a major update to their algorithm, databases, search engine rankings and PageRank.
When this event happens, it drives professional search
engine optimizers crazy. Why? Because they spend their full time jobs
getting client websites "optimized" so they show up high in the
natural, or also known as "organic" search results. These results are
often referred to as the "free search results".
When the major
update comes, often, all the work the SEO's did goes to waste. It's a
major game in which Google continues to try to improve itself and it's
search results relevancy to their searchers.
For SEO's and their
clients, there's nothing "free" about these exercises. The stakes are
high, as high rankings can drive big sales and revenues.
So when
the SEO's see their rankings fall after a major update, there's panic
in the SEO forums and many of us have to hold our friends' hands, refer
them to a good therapist and put them on antidepressants for a while.
Don't fall into that trap when you build a website.
It's
important to have proper keywords and other basic html page
construction and info, but mainly for your visitors, not for the search
engines. If you spend your time focusing on Google, especially without
considering MSN or Yahoo, you're going to waste a lot of time.
Build
a solid website with relevant keywords and either hope, or hunt for
quality inbound links. If your content is good, people will link to you
without any effort from yourself.
