Build A Website - Safely

Security is one of the most prized possessions on the Internet these days.....
There are various things you can do to protect your website and keep it secure:

1. Use a web host running the Linux operating system. Linux is much, much more secure than Microsoft's IIS.

2. Make sure your ISP does not permit your SMTP server to serve as a "relay" server. Ask them - they will know what this means.

3. Make sure your email boxes, databases, site access and admin management panels use at least 6 characters with one number and one upper case numerical character (i.e. #, $, % etc.).

4. Password protect directories. Most admin management panels have a Password Protect Directory function. Use this to protect directories that you don't want anyone seeing or getting access to. This would also prevent search engine and other spiders from getting in.

5. Monitor your disk and bandwidth usage. These indicators will tell you whether you might have a runaway script, stolen web page copy or unauthorized database use.

6. Use a secure browser. I've been using Firefox lately, and absolutely love it. It is much safer than Internet Explorer, faster and offers some very slick plug-in's that IE doesn't.

Many people don't take advantage of the above steps, and end up compromised. Don't be one of them!

We use a web hosting provider that offers all of the above and more. If your web host isn't offering you great value AND secure website computing, you should make a switch today! If you tell BAPort that you read about them in the Instant Build A Website blog, they'll give you one month free.

Skip - great piece! I've been playing with Firefox all day and it's safe to say, I'm sold! Goodbye IE!

Also, your tips on usernames and passwords was really helpful to me!
