As webmasters, we're always looking for nifty and easy to use tools and tricks to help us build a website and grow our traffic to it.....
One of the most time consuming activities of building a website is creating the content.
That task, as I can attest to, being the author of 3 daily blogs, and managing nearly a dozen other high traffic websites, can really eat your time.
And, as you know, traffic, whether you are selling something, offering free advice or offering a venue for advertising, is the key to achieving revenue goals.
One tool that is out there we have recently tested on one of our sites is the
Carp RSS aggregator.
What this little goodie does is allow you to have html based RSS feeds display on any given page or pages.
Why is this so cool?
You probably know by now that the search engines come around your website on some time period basis. If you update your main homepage daily or a few times a week, you can "train" the SE spiders to come by your site more frequently.
This is why blogs are so good for SE rankings.
However, many people don't want the obligation or responsibility of writing on such a regular basis.
Enter Carp.
The first thing you have to know is whatever page you put Carp on, must be a PHP page. Carp is free. You download it, follow the simple install instructions, put a little piece of code on your home page, specify what RSS feed from another site (i.e. Yahoo or any of the 5 million blogs out there, including this one! Please - take our RSS!).
Once installed, Carp then displays those headlines on your homepage. Boom - you now have daily fresh content, of in it's default config, 5 headlines from whatever RSS feed you use.
Those headlines are displayed, as I said, as HTML, so the SE spiders see them as great spider food.
All you do is set it up and let it run.
Then you'll need to continue to add content of course to the rest of your site, as usual. But then, when you add a new link to your navigation, it will be found very quickly because Carp has trained the spiders to look for new content every day. Make sure you select RSS feeds that are updated daily, or you gain little benefit from Carp.
Have fun!
