So, as I was saying the other day in my
Share The Spyware Love story....
This is an important topic related to building a website, since if you are constantly battling spyware or viruses, you are never going to build a website!
I downloaded Microsoft Antispyware software (MAS).
Their website looks very nice, as usual.
Microsoft makes the appearance of you having to go through a "validation" process, which you don't. Just click no.
Ultimately, you'll get to the actual download. I downloaded it and installed it. As usual too, it wants it's own directory, to install in the Windows Startup group, etc.
So I say no to all of that. I don't want another MS piece of software hogging more of my RAM than W2K already does!
It now seems that Microsoft is co-opting Google's notion of "Beta", as the MSA has "Beta 1" in big bold letters on the splash screen.
It seems like a nice piece of software. There are some settings you can monkey with. You can enable real time protection, which, if you don't have a firewall and strong strong anti virus software, I would suggest you do.
I think Microsoft also took a page from Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition, which is what I run. The NAV corporate edition is a pricey piece of software but affords unlimited definition updates, quarantines, schedules and a lot of other bells and whistles.
If the colors were different, I'd swear MAS was NAV in a redone UI. MAS has definitions, various levels and types of protections and even a "network" that affords MAS near instant reporting of new spies. There does seem some interesting benefits to that. Assuming a lot of people download and use this software and use that network, MAS will be able to keep this baby current.
With the massive install base they have, perhaps we can finally knock out this insidious crap from our PC lives!
The MAS network is the only thing I gave MS my permission to track me - EVER!
Anyway, I give this tool, so far, a complete 5 mice up (the top of my rating scale).
Oh yea, I had no spyware (according to MAS)!
Have a great weekend!
