Checking PageRank

The other day, I exclaimed my fear and excitement of uninstalling the G toolbar from my Firefox and IE browsers.  Today, I'm going to tell you how I can do some periodic checks on my sites PR.....

First, you should know that the calculation of PR that you see in the toolbar is a simulated PR designed more for general evaluation than any strict PR number.  In truth, PR is a fractional figure.

But G has done a fine job of creating some value out of its simple little tool.  More to the point, what they have really done is create a data mining gold rush for themselves to keep tabs on those who use it.

I read in a forum recently that one fellow saw his site's PR go up one full point, to a PR6 within a month of uninstalling his Toolbar.  He claimed to not have done any other additions or changes to that site, including link exchanges.  So if everything was equal, it perhaps tells us that G is monitoring what sites we go to and for those of a preponderance of visits, such as our own sites would cause, G may "penalize" or filter the PR of those sites.

At any rate, this is not the particular reason I uninstalled the G toolbar.

Call me paranoid, but I'm getting more leary every day about who is watching us.  I'm not some nutjob, nor do I even bother with porn, pharma or illicit websites.  I don't download music or videos - legally or otherwise.  So it's not about that.

It's that I'm growing to want to protect my privacy as I age.  Period.

So, on to the promise.

Here's the first website you can use to check PageRank:  G PageRank Report

I'll post some others that you may want to use too.  Just realize - PR is a calculation and smart programmers have figured out where to go in the Google network to find that calculation and translate it into the Toolbar styled number.

Go for it!
