Google Becomes ICANN Registrar

Yes, the mighty G continues to surprise....
In this article, Cnet
news.com tells about G's latest venture: becomming an ICANN certified domain registrar.
G's public statement says
"Google became a domain name registrar to learn more about the Internet's domain name system".
I say that's bull.
In 2003 or 2004 (sorry, time moves so quickly, I can't remember which year), it was rumored and claimed as fact by many that Google started using Whois data as one more point of calculation in their PageRank algo. After a period of this, many domain registrars complained, as did a lot of other companies, and they, as I recall, were forced, or volunteered to cease using Whois data as it violated ICANN terms.
The rumor was that the Whois data was one more way for G to be able to correlate website owners, IP addresses, hosting firms, and to be able to cross check all that data such that people or companies with multiple websites who were cross linking, would get a penalty or lower ranking. Those schiesters were using a hole in G's system to inflate their rankings.
It is understandable that G wanted to eliminate that hole and unfair advantage.
And my personal belief is that G is using this new move, which is acceptable to ICANN now that G is an authorized Registrar, is designed to fulfill that original rumor / fact.
It's highly unlikely that Google will compete with Godaddy or any other registrar. There's not enough money in that business today.
So if you cross link your websites, beware!
