How Do You Find Niche Markets To Build Your Website Around?

I get this question all the time. Since my first entry into the tech business back in 1984, I was lucky to have worked in two niche businesses back then: legal and the title insurance markets. But today, webmasters are struggling to understand and find niches they can build their website in.
For those of you having difficulty finding niche markets, here is one of the finest websites around:
http://dmoz.org
This is the Open Directory Project (ODP). It is about 7 years old now and is a spinoff from the old Netscape, before AOL bought them.
ODP is maintained by all volunteers, which in the larger internet, being an ODP editor is a rather prestigious duty and association to have. There is a whole universe of ODP editors who network among themselves.
Anyway, ODP can give you perhaps millions of niche markets to consider and research. I would advise trying to navigate the directory from the homepage if you are really stumped as to what niche market you should go after.
You will get filled with ideas immediaely.
Once you have settled on a few decent topics or niches, I would suggest typing in a few keyword phrases in the ODP "search" feature to hunt for more ideas.
Then print out your topics so you won't forget them. Just hit your print button!
Good luck!
