For those of you trying to identify new markets or niches to build new websites around, you'll find this post worth your while.
Media Finder at http://www.mediafinder.com/ is an awesome resource to locate and identify hot new markets.

As of this writing, on their front page is a link to an article on Folio magazine's website.  Here is a clip from that article:

It seems living the good life is on the minds of American and Canadian magazine publishers, according to the newest edition of the Standard Periodical Directory released Monday (December 20) by Oxbridge Communications.

The number of interior design and décor magazines tripled since the directory's 1994 edition, with 142 in 2004 up from just 47 in 1994.  Lifestyle magazines grew 169 percent to 215 titles in 2004 from 80 in 1994, while wedding titles increased 143 percent (37 in 1994 to 90 in 2004).  Man's best friend saw a similar surge, as dog magazines were up 136 percent from 1994.  Family and golf categories also doubled in number.

Other, broader categories saw significant decline.  In-house publications folded 277 titles in the 10-year span to a mere 88 in 2004 (76 percent).  General interest magazines were down to 74 percent, while television and video category titles dropped 49 percent.

Despite losing 102 titles, the religion and theology category held the top spot with 583 titles.  Travel (541), regional interest (528), college student (478) and alumni magazines (461) rounded out the top five.

Now, if you think about it, to start, print, distribute and sell magazines is a pretty capital intensive business.  You KNOW those investors do their research before committing to publishing a magazine.

Moreover, hiring writers, editors, printing and outfitting everyone with desks, chairs, PC's, laser printers, email systems, etc. means that mag publishers are going into that market for the long term, not just a 12 month "test".

The above clip alone gives you some great insights into hot markets.

Use Media Finder to further identify hot markets and you can build dozens of niche websites in those spaces to pickup the online readers.
