Building A Website - Search Engine Issues

Skip | 22 February, 2005 11:51

If you are building new websites, you better read this.  It could save you a lot of time and frustration.
Yahoo and MSN search are starting to grow their market share.  That is fabulous news for those of us who own and operate websites.

That means that Google is losing market share.  This is not such a bad thing.  Google still has over 50% market share, but the figure is dropping.

One reason its dropping for Google, in my opinion, is that Google has introduced an "aging delay", or as some are calling it, a "sandbox", for new websites.

This means that if and when you create a new website and get some links to it, Google might spider it and it may even end up in their database index.

However, you won't get any decent rankings for new websites for up to 8 months.  I've written about this here in the blog before.  And frankly, this isn't news to anyone who pays any attention to SEO.  However if you are relatively new to building websites or don't follow or stay current with SEO work, you will find this new info worth considering strongly.

The reasoning, or common thought from all the experts about why Google has this aging delay seems to be to keep 'spammers' and manipulators of Google's algorithm at arm's length.  Also, many companies and webmasters have tried to manipulate their SERPS by interlinking multiple websites, often throwaway's, with new website introductions.

The aging delay in theory minimizes those effects at SERPS manipulation.

I don't advocate or support manipulating any search engine's SERPS or link manipulation schemes.

However if you do want Google to index and rank your website, the best thing you can do is immediately get your domain with at least a single page on it and link to it, or get links to it and wait out the up to 8 month delay, or just take your time building your site and content.

Unless you want to focus on Yahoo and MSN (and others) to drive visitors to your site.

Just thought I'd point this out to ya!
