Like you said the big question is what products or services could one sell that relate to the big stories, Terry Shiavo, Ten Commandments, Etc.. I think one could easily come up with dozens if you just put your mind to it.

I agree, this can be profitable. One other consideration is your passion for the topic. As David said, you have to consider related selling items. I think your passion for the subject is vital to the success of the site. If you aren't interested in the topic, you aren't going to stay on it very long. Very rarely does someone setup a site, with no enjoyment or knowledge for the topic itself, and walk away with money. I think it's possible, but it is rare. I guess in that case the person enjoys building the sites and the business development end, and then moving onto the next thing. I know I couldn't do that, I like to build around things I know and love.
